What is Advanced Placement®?

Established more than 40 years ago by the national nonprofit College Board, the Advanced Placement (AP) Program consists of 37 college-level courses in 22 academic disciplines, from art history to world history. Students who take and pass these courses and related exams have the opportunity to earn credit or advanced standing at most of the nation’s colleges and universities.

A significant—and growing—body of research shows that success in AP coursework is predictive of success in college. To prepare high-school graduates for the rigors of college and the demands of a changing workforce and a knowledge-based economy, Project Opening Doors seeks to increase the number of AP offerings in Connecticut’s schools as well as boost student enrollment in those courses.
