Description

Are you and your managers prepared when faced with situations that, if handled incorrectly, could damage employee morale and lead to costly legal action?

Managers and supervisors at all levels are challenged daily to do more with fewer employees, to motivate diverse groups of people, and to face up to tough people-problems in the workplace. An important key to success is meeting those challenges while protecting themselves and their companies from legal liability. That's why everyone who manages people needs to become familiar with basic principles of employment law. This program will give you the information you need to make sound legal decisions in a variety of personnel-management areas.

Topics will include:

  • Laws that apply to your company: what size companies are affected by which laws
  • Interviewing questions you may and may not ask
  • Personnel files: what should be included
  • Discipline and documentation
  • Leave issues: state and federal Family and Medical Leave Acts, ADA, workers’ comp, short-term disability, pregnancy leave, etc.
  • Wage and hour laws, including overtime obligations, break requirements, and travel time issues
  • Exempt vs. nonexempt employees: understanding who is entitled to overtime pay and when
  • Termination procedures
