New Amazon Fulfillment Center Will Create 1,000 Jobs

Amazon is building a new state-of-the-art robotics fulfillment center that will bring 1,000 jobs to Connecticut’s Naugatuck Valley.
Gov. Ned Lamont joined Amazon officials and other state and local leaders Oct. 21 for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Sheriden Drive site along the border of Waterbury and Naugatuck.
“We are excited to grow our business and continue to expand operations in Connecticut, especially in the Naugatuck Valley region,” said Amazon head of Connecticut economic development Glendowlyn Thames.
“This development marks a historic economic development project for the region,” said Thames.
“It will become an economic catalyst that will generate substantial revenue for local services while creating jobs and opportunities for area residents.”
Economic Catalyst
The property—part of the Waterbury/Naugatuck Industrial Park—was formerly municipal owned land that had been undeveloped for decades.
The multi-story, 3.2 million square foot facility will be Amazon’s seventh fulfillment or sortation center in Connecticut.
The facility—known as a “first-mile” fulfillment center—is where products are received, stored, and prepared for shipping to customers.

The facility will use robotics technology to process up to 800,000 packages per day at full capacity.
“At the end of the day, this is going to be a major distribution facility,” said Lamont.
“It’s extraordinary this is the way distribution and shopping is happening—and its happening right here in Connecticut.”
‘More Than a Building’
The facility will be home to 1,000 employees when completed.
The project will also create more than 300 construction jobs through its completion.
“The steel we’re erecting today is going to hold up more than just a building.”

“These are good-paying jobs with comprehensive benefits on day one and access to the many pathways that Amazon offers to start and grow a successful career,” said Thames.
“The steel we’re erecting today is going to hold up more than just a building,” said Naugatuck Mayor Pete Hess.
“It’s going to hold up jobs, dreams, and a shared prosperity that will bind Naugatuck and Waterbury forever.”
Collaboration
Hess and Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernewski, Jr. highlighted the collaboration and partnership between Waterbury, Naugatuck, Amazon and the state that led to the project.
“This is going to be a true game-changer for our region,” said Pernewski.

“This is exactly the sort of forward-looking investment that we’ve worked to attract—one that connects technology, opportunity, and long-term economic growth.”
“This project is another example of Amazon’s commitment to the Connecticut economy,” added CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima.
“It highlights what we can accomplish as a state through municipal collaboration and public-private partnerships.”
Investing in Connecticut
Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $11.5 billion in Connecticut.
The company employs more than 15,500 employees in the state, and recently announced plans to create 3,500 seasonal positions.
Amazon’s investments have also contributed more than $11 billion to the state’s economy while supporting another 8,500 indirect jobs
“I applaud Amazon’s continued investments in Connecticut,” said Lamont.
“I look forward to the impact this new facility will have on the region and our state for years to come.”
