Taxpayers who received extensions on their state and federal income taxes have until Oct. 15 to file those returns.

The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services and the Internal Revenue Service remind taxpayers who were granted extensions that the deadline is approaching.

Taxpayers who have yet to file state income tax returns can visit the DRS website for guidance on filing requirements and obligations.

DRS encourages taxpayers and tax professionals to use the agency’s electronic filing options, which are safe, secure, and the quickest way to make payments and receive refunds.

In addition, the DRS reminds taxpayers who did not request extensions but have yet to file a 2019 return that, in general, they can avoid penalties and interest by filing as soon as possible and paying any taxes owed.

Taxpayers can call the DRS weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm at 860.297.5962, toll-free outside greater Hartford at 800.382.9463, or for the hearing impaired, TDD/TT users, 860.297.4911.

Federal Deadline

Meanwhile, the IRS issued similar advice about the Oct. 15 deadline to taxpayers who were given extensions on their federal income tax returns.

“For those who still owe, pay as soon as possible to reduce any penalties and interest,” the agency said in a statement.

The IRS also encourages taxpayers to use its electronic filing options, including IRS Free File.

The agency advises taxpayers and tax professionals to continue using electronic options to support social distancing and speed the processing of tax returns, refunds, and payments.

If you owe the IRS but can’t pay it all at once, the agency offers several payment options on its website.

Taxpayers may find answers to many of their questions using the interactive tax assistant, a tax law resource that works using a series of questions and responses.

The IRS also provides answers for frequently asked questions.
