A special election to fill a vacancy in the State Senate representing the 10th Senatorial District (New Haven and West Haven), will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. The seat became vacant on January 7 following the resignation of Toni Harp who is the new Mayor of New Haven.
The Democratic candidate will be State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield (D-New Haven), nominated in a party convention this week.
Another announced candidate, former New Haven Alder Darnell Goldson, did not seek the party’s endorsement but says he will run as an independent, petitioning candidate.
It is not known whether Republicans will field a candidate for the open seat.
If Holder-Winfield is successful in the Senate run, then another special election will be held to fill the vacated House seat.
