Connecticut Sales Tax Free Week Begins Aug. 20

08.01.2023
Issues & Policies

With back-to-school right around the corner, the state is once again getting ready for sales tax free week.

From Sunday, Aug. 20 through Saturday, Aug. 26, most clothing and footwear items under $100 will be exempt from the state’s 6.35% sales and use tax.

The exemption applies regardless of how many of those items are sold to a customer.

It also applies to:

  • Discounted or sale items
  • Online purchases
  • Any tax placed on shipping fees
  • Coupon sales
  • Buy one, get one free and similar offers, as long as the price for each item is less than $100
  • Clothing and footwear rentals

Exclusions

This year will be Connecticut’s 23rd annual sales tax free week.

There are important exclusions from the sales tax exemption, including items that are normally sold as a unit.

For example, a pair of shoes or a suit that are normally sold together cannot be separated and sold as individual items to qualify for the exemption.

Jewelry, hair accessories and athletic equipment are also excluded from the exemption.

The state’s website features a list of the items that are and are not exempt as well as examples of how and when the exemption is applied.
