Democratic candidates swept snowstorm-impacted special elections Feb. 28, retaining three state House seats.

In the 6th House District, which covers parts of Hartford and West Hartford, two-term Hartford city councilor James Sanchez defeated petitioning candidate Jason Diaz, a Hartford firefighter.

That seat was left vacant when Democratic incumbent Edwin Vargas stepped down Jan. 3 to take a position at Central Connecticut State University.

Democrat Kai Belton, a social worker, defeated Republican Deborah Kleckowski, an insurance broker, to win the 100th House District.

The Middletown-based seat was left vacant following the tragic death of Democratic Rep. Quentin Williams in a Jan. 5 car accident.

Williams had just begun this third term representing Middletown in the House.

Stamford voters elected Democrat Anabel Figueroa to succeed fellow Democrat Dan Fox in the 148th House District.

Fox stepped down Jan. 4 to pursue an appointment as a State Superior Court judge after winning a seventh term in November.

Figueroa, a medical and surgical unit coordinator, defeated Republican Olga Anastos, who manages a family owned business in Stamford.

Democrats hold 98 seats in the state House with Republicans representing 53 districts.
