FuelCell Energy Extends ExxonMobil Carbon Capture Agreement

Danbury-based FuelCell Energy and ExxonMobil Corp. have updated and extended their joint development agreement to develop carbon capture technology.
The technology captures CO2 emissions from industrial sources, simultaneously producing electricity and hydrogen.
The partnership was first announced last year, with the two companies testing the technology they said “could significantly reduce CO2 emissions from key industries.”
The agreement will now extend through the end of 2026, allowing for “continued development of the technology,” the companies said in an April 8 statement.
It also supports the pilot project at the Esso Nederland BV Rotterdam Manufacturing Complex in the Netherlands.
The companies expect to launch the project in early 2026.
‘Significant Milestone’
FuelCell Energy CEO and president Jason Few called updated agreement a “significant milestone.”
He said the technology has met or exceeded key technical performance criteria.
Through the agreement, FuelCell will be able to incorporate elements of the technology into existing carbon capture products that are already marketed to customers.
“There are significant commercial possibilities for this technology to enable a world empowered by clean energy.”

The agreement is expected to accelerate delivery of the technology while the next generation of cell and module design is being demonstrated in Rotterdam.
FuelCell’s Torrington facility is manufacturing those modules.
“Through this updated agreement, we can move more quickly to provide access to this superior technology in our existing platform targeting small to mid-scale opportunities while we demonstrate large scale carbon capture at Esso’s refinery in Rotterdam,” said Few.
FuelCell Energy and ExxonMobil said they intend to negotiate a commercial framework to deploy the technology for carbon capture.
“It also reinforces our view that there are significant commercial possibilities for this technology to enable a world empowered by clean energy,” Few said.
