Comcast Sources Solar Power for Regional Operations
Comcast is making a major investment in renewable electricity in Connecticut.
As part of a 15-year agreement with Constellation, the telecommunications company is acquiring 70 megawatts of solar electricity from the Gravel Pit Solar project in East Windsor.
The acquisition is enough to power 43% of Comcast’s operations in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
That includes the company’s Western New England regional headquarters in Berlin, NBC Sports in Stamford, and NBC Connecticut in West Hartford.
“We’re proud to be powering nearly half of our regional operations and our Western New England headquarters with renewable solar electricity that will be sourced right here in Connecticut,” said Comcast Western New England Region senior vice president Carolyne Hannan.
Carbon Neutral
The contract represents an annual volume of 111,000 megawatt hours, or about one year’s worth of electricity for more than 150,000 homes.
“The project will have a meaningful impact in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions while assisting in New England’s clean energy transition,” said Berlin mayor Mark Kaczynski.
Comcast’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2035 for direct and indirect emissions it owns and controls, across its global operations.
The Gravel Pit Solar project, located on a 485-acre site in East Windsor, will create approximately 200 construction jobs and at least two permanent positions in maintenance and operations.
The project is expected to reach commercial operation at the end of 2024 with a total generation of 120 megawatts.
