Shoppers are shopping and candidates campaigning this holiday season in the New Britain area as voters prepare to go to the polls on Tuesday, Jan. 10 to elect a state representative for the 24th House District.

State Rep. Timothy O’Brien's election as mayor of New Britain in November prompted a special election to fill the now-vacant House seat. O’Brien, a Democrat, resigned from the legislature when he was inaugurated mayor on November 15. The 24th District lies in New Britain and Newington.

Vying for the House seat are Democrat Rick Lopes and Republican Peter Steele.

Lopes is a former New Britain alderman and currently a project manager for the state Department of Administrative Services.

Steele is a licensed real estate agent who served eight years as an executive assistant for former New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart.
