Commercial Battery Storage Program Capacity Increased
The Connecticut Green Bank and utilities Eversource and United Illuminating this week increased the capacity of a program designed to incentivize customer-sited energy storage projects.
Coming two years ahead of schedule to meet growing demand, the move adds 100 megawatts to the existing 50 megawatts launched in January 2022.
The commercial energy storage program is targeting the implementation of 580 megawatts by 2030 as part of the state’s overall goal of 1,000 megawatts.
CBIA’s Pete Myers welcomed the announcement, calling it “great news for the business community that will continue to incentivize investment in grid reliability.”
Battery storage systems give commercial and industrial customers an opportunity for peak demand management and can increase resiliency by offering backup power during an outage.
Incentives
Storage systems tied to new or existing solar PV systems also offer an environmentally friendly alternative for customers with fossil fuel generators.
Incentives are available to help reduce the cost of purchasing a battery system, with a maximum incentive of 50% of the project cost.
Enrolled commercial customers also receive performance incentive payments based on the average power their electric storage project contributes to the grid during critical periods.
CBIA’s 2023 Transform Connecticut policy solutions include the optimization of the commercial and industrial energy storage solutions battery incentive program to promote electric grid reliability and affordability.
Myers said this week’s decision to increase program capacity ahead of schedule addresses that policy goal.
