Yahoo Bans Telecommuting

Sparking a debate over the tech industry’s common practice of telecommuting, Yahoo’s CEO has ordered all work-from-home employees back to the office as of June 1.

Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home, said the company’s memo to employees. We need to be one Yahoo, and that starts with physically being together.

Many workers, particularly working parents, charged that Yahoo had abandoned its modern approach to helping employees balance work/home demands and called the change in policy a morale-buster. Others supported the move, saying there was reason to shake things up at the once-vaunted Internet company, which had earned a reputation in recent years for falling behind in both innovation and competition.

To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration are important, so we need to be working side-by-side, explained the memo. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings.

The change decision will apparently impact several hundred employees who work from home full time. It was unclear whether the order extended to employees who might work from home one or two days a week.
