The state’s Department of Revenue Services this month launched the first wave of its new multi-year information technology modernization effort.

The initiative allows Connecticut’s businesses to file their returns and make certain state tax payments, including sales tax and withholding.

The new myconneCT site replaces the online taxpayer service center currently used to file returns and other tax-related transactions.

In the long-term, DRS expects the site to be used to pay business and corporation taxes and make personal income tax payments.

DRS expects the site to eventually accept business, corporation, and personal income tax payments.

Beginning Sept. 21, businesses can create a myconneCT username and use the new system to pay sales taxes and withholding payments.

Department of Administrative Services commissioner and state COO Josh Geballe said the project is part of an overall initiative to modernize government technology platforms.

“We’re not into building custom software any more,” he told the Connecticut Mirror.

Demonstration

The department has prepared a 15-minute demonstration of the new program (use the passcode 7MP8^sC#).

Key points covered in the demonstration include:

  • Setting up a myconneCT username (at 2:20)
  • Filing a sales tax return/making a payment (6:25)
  • Sending a secure message to DRS (10:48)
  • Viewing letters sent by DRS (11:45)
  • Tips and closing notes (12:57)

As part of their outreach efforts, DRS plans to reach out by email to selected taxpayers during the week beginning Sept. 21 to offer advanced opportunities to engage with the portal.
