Democrat Wins Hartford State House Special Election
Democrat Maryam Khan won a March 1 special election for the 5th House District seat—which includes parts of Hartford and Windsor—vacated by Democrat incumbent Brandon McGee.
Khan defeated Republican candidate Charles Jackson and petitioning candidate Lawrence Jaggon, with just seven percent of registered voters turning out.
McGee, who held the seat since 2013, stepped down in January to join Gov. Ned Lamont’s reelection campaign.
A member of the Windsor Board of Election since 2017, Khan recently resigned from her position as a special education teacher at A.I. Prince Technical High School.
Khan won 75% of votes cast, with Jackson taking 14% and Jaggon 11%.
Democrats hold 97 seats and Republicans 54 in the 151-seat House of Representatives.
