The new calendar year serves as a reminder for business leaders to file an annual report with the state of Connecticut and be cautious about using outside companies for help.

Most employers are legally required to file an annual report to keep business details maintained beginning Jan. 1.

The Connecticut Secretary of the State’s office will email employers one month prior to the report due date, but business leaders can also view their due date using an online account

State officials note the filing is an easy process, and should not require assistance from an outside company.

Businesses can file directly with the Secretary of the State to avoid additional fees in a relatively simple process.

There have been reports of fraudulent activity in recent years where companies offer help filing the annual report.

State officials said scammers often design mail to advise businesses about purchasing certain products or forms in order to be legally compliant.

Small business owners should report fraudulent activity with the Office of the Attorney General at 860.808.5318 or file a complaint with the office online.
