OSHA Targets Lead Exposure Limits

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is reviewing lead exposure standards in an effort to reduce blood lead levels in various industries, including manufacturing. 

The Advanced Notice of Public Rulemaking is asking for input on modifying OSHA’s current lead standards for general industry and construction over the next two months. 

The CDC recently published studies suggesting OSHA’s permissible exposure limit to lead may be too high. 

As a result, OSHA officials identified four areas of the lead standards to review.

Employers are encouraged to comment on blood lead level triggers for medical removal protection, medical surveillance provisions, permissible exposure limit, and ancillary provisions for personal protective equipment, hygiene, and training. 

Employers can also provide their own practices that address workplace lead exposure. 

Comments must be made on the federal rulemaking portal by Aug. 29, 2022.
