SCORE Fairfield County is presenting a free small business workshop for small businesses next month in Stamford. The workshop will provide attendees an overview of what’s legal and what’s not when it comes to using social media platforms.

Social media websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are changing the ways we advertise and promote ourselves to others, the way we communicate with others, and even the way we think about things. The rise of social media has been so fast and so pervasive that our legal system has had trouble keeping up with the new technology. As a result, there are many cutting-edge legal issues that attorneys, accountants and other professionals are only beginning to grapple with. In this fast-paced, entertaining presentation, technology lawyer Cliff Ennico will walk you through the social media maze and help answer some of your questions about the rules that apply when you engage in social activities online.

You will learn “state of the art” answers to the most pressing questions involving social media, including:

Do you have privacy rights when you post something on Facebook?

Can you be sued if somebody else says something bad on your Facebook page?

Can someone post information about you online without your permission?

Can employers restrict their employees’ social media activities?

Who owns a Facebook or Twitter account?

Can the Government (or a hostile person) use your social media postings as evidence against you?

Can you use information on someone else’s Facebook page without their permission?

Do you have to charge sales taxes when you sell something on a social media website?

Can you be sued because of something you say on Facebook or LinkedIn?

Our Speaker: Cliff Ennico, former host of Public Television’s popular MoneyHunt show for entrepreneurs, is a leading business expert, attorney and author of the nationally syndicated newspaper column Succeeding in Your Business. As a spokesperson for eBay, The Applegate Network, SBTV.com and other high technology companies, he speaks throughout the United States on the legal issues of the Internet, e-commerce and emerging technologies. He is the author of several books on business law and finance, including Advising eBusinesses and The eBay Seller’s Tax and Legal Answer Book.
