Gateway Community College is offering a free, five-week job training and placement program for high school graduates and state residents 18 or older who are unemployed or underemployed.

The Skill Up for Manufacturing Program is sponsored by Workforce Alliance and will be held at Gateway’s New Haven campus Feb. 4 through March 8, 2019.

Interested candidates are urged to visit the Skill Up website and complete the application process. The deadline to apply is Dec. 7, 2018.

Candidates accepted into the program will attend classes six hours a day, five days a week.

They’ll get the fundamental skills that manufacturers need from entry-level workers.

Participants will also receive assistance searching for a job.

Manufacturing Opportunities

Manufacturers will have direct hiring opportunities, access to hiring incentives, and are expected to continue training their new hires on the job.

Manufacturers participating in the program include Wepco Plastics, PTA Plastics, Penn Globe, Brooks & Whittle Packaging Solutions, and the New Haven Manufacturers Association.

The first Skill Up session has room for only 20 applicants, but subsequent sessions are planned for 2019.

Support services for participants include travel reimbursement, daycare assistance, and required books, tools, and clothing.

Additionally, there is a cash stipend awarded to participants who successfully complete training benchmarks.

The program is funded by the U.S. Labor Department through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and Temporary Aid to Needy Families.
