8:35 am | Managing Gender Issues in the Workplace
- Patricia Reilly, Partner, Murtha Cullina
Many managers unwittingly expose employers to potential liability by failing to recognize or resolve gender-related conflict. We’ll discuss how best to respond to employee complaints, and how to distinguish between minor co-worker conflict and potential harassment. We’ll also address common issues that arise with workers who identify as LGBTQIA+, including bathroom accommodations, co-worker hostility, dress codes, and inappropriate customer demands.
9:35 am | Break
9:45 am | Building a Positive Workplace Culture
- Robin Imbrogno, CEO & Founder, The Human Resource Consulting Group
A strong corporate culture fosters high-performing, engaged workers who are more likely to stay long-term and promote their own and their company’s growth. Managers are a key component of this process. In this segment, you’ll learn specific, immediately usable strategies for creating a workplace culture that encourages success.
10:45 am | Addressing Absenteeism
- Patrick McHale, Attorney, Kainen, Escalera & McHale PC
Disciplining employees for absenteeism can often land an employer in hot water. Supervisors and managers must be able to recognize “protected” absences, such as those triggered by the FMLA, the ADA, workers’ compensation, and Connecticut sick leave. We address common frustrating problems, like employees who call out with no explanation, those who seemingly abandon their job, and those who use non-existent vacation days. We recommend useful PTO policies and best practices for handling chronic absenteeism. You’ll leave with a managerial checklist to guide you through the dos and dont’s of addressing past, present, and future absences.
