When employees leave your company, whether due to layoffs, termination, or most other reasons, you are legally required to offer them COBRA or State Continuation coverage. Failing to comply can lead to significant penalties.

CBIA, in partnership with Vimly Benefit Solutions Inc. (VBS), makes compliance easy by managing the entire process for you.

Federal COBRA or Connecticut State Continuation Requirements

Your company’s COBRA or Connecticut State Continuation requirements depend on your number of employees and the CBIA Health Connections COBRA-eligible benefits you participate in.

COBRA for Employers with 20 or More Employees

If your company has 20 or more employees, Federal COBRA applies. Employees can continue coverage for:

• 18 months – CBIA level-funded medical plans
• 18 months – dental and vision plans through CBIA Health Connections

State Continuation for Employers with 19 or Fewer Employees

For companies with 19 or fewer employees, Connecticut State Continuation (mini-COBRA) applies. Employees can continue coverage for:

• 18 months – self-insured CBIA level-funded medical plans*
• 18 months – dental and vision plans through CBIA Health Connections

*Employers under Connecticut State Continuation are not required to continue level-funded medical plans. However, if you use CBIA’s administration service, you must continue all medical, dental, and vision benefits you offer.

To get started:

1. Sign the CBIA COBRA/State Continuation Service Agreement and return it to CBIA.
2. If you have former employees or dependents already enrolled, complete the Continuant Takeover Form (included in the package).
