GOP Holds Monroe House Seat

Republican Tony Scott defeated two other candidates to win an April 13 special election to fill the vacant 112th House District seat.

The seat, which includes Monroe and parts of Newtown, became vacant when Republican incumbent J.P. Sredzinski resigned Feb. 17.

Scott, a one time chair of the Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Commission and a former member of the town’s Economic Development Commission, received 53% of the vote.

Democrat Nicholas Kapoor, a Board of Education member, got 46% of the vote and Independent candidate William Furrier received 1%.

Republicans now hold 54 seats in the House and the Democratic Party has 96, with one vacancy.

That vacancy, for the 145th House District seat vacated when incumbent Patricia Billie Miller (D-Stamford) was elected to the state Senate in a March 2 special election, will be filled April 27.

Stamford voters will choose between Democrat Corey Paris and Republican JD Ospina.

Paris is the director of development for a Fairfield County nonprofit and Ospina serves on the city’s Social Services Commission.
