Electric Boat Awarded $967 Contract Modification

The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $967 million contract modification for work on Virginia-class fast-attack submarines.

The modification will go toward development and design efforts for the submarines.

Electric Boat’s facility in Groton will do approximately 95% of the work, according to U.S. Defense Department officials.

Other work will be happen at sites in McLeansville, NC, Newport News, VA, and Newport and Quonset Point, RI. 

Work is expected to be completed by October 2024.

‘Critical Work’

“This contract award supports critical work to further advance the capability and superiority of the Virginia class submarine,” said Electric Boat president Kevin Graney.

Electric Boat is the prime contractor and lead design yard for the Virginia-class submarines.

They are doing the construction along with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia.

The Virginia-class submarines are designed for anti-submarine and surface ship warfare and special operations support.

“We are proud to continue our tradition of delivering this state-of-the-art platform that ensures the safety of our sailors and their continued dominance in the undersea domain,” Graney said.

Work on the submarines is one of several projects underway at Electric Boat. 

In March, Graney said the company was in the midst of a “once-in-a-generation expansion.”

The company plans to hire 4,000 to 5,000 people annually.
