Shore Line East Expands Commuting Options

Connecticut employers along the I-95 corridor are getting a new tool to help employees get to work.

Gov. Ned Lamont and the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced the addition of four weekday trains to CTrail Shore Line East starting Oct. 5.

The change expands service between New Haven and New London—creating new connections for riders traveling from as far as New York City and Stamford as well.

For businesses that have struggled to fill early morning and evening shifts because employees simply couldn’t get there, this is welcome news.

Expanding Opportunities

Funded through a $3 million state budget adjustment, the additional trains will operate in both directions along the New Haven-New London corridor, with stops at all Shore Line East stations.

“Our members tell us constantly that inconsistent transit options limit their ability to fill open positions. These new trains close real gaps in the existing schedule, and are a direct result of the state listening to rider and employer feedback.”

Transportation Strategy

The additional service is the latest in a series of transportation initiatives aimed at expanding mobility and workforce access across Connecticut.

CBIA supported legislation this year that expands an employer tax credit for commuter benefits and continues funding the state’s microtransit pilot.

Today, nine primary microtransit services operate in more than 17 Connecticut communities, helping workers bridge first- and last-mile transportation gaps and connect to jobs, transit hubs, and other destinations.

Online comments will be accepted through Oct. 13, giving employers and commuters an opportunity to identify additional transportation needs and service improvements.

Employers should share the updated Shore Line East schedule with employees once it is posted.
