US Army Awards Sikorsky $234M Black Hawk Contract

The U.S. Army has awarded Sikorsky a $234 million contract to build an additional 16 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters.

The agreement is a modification to a contract Sikorsky and the Army signed earlier this year, and it keeps the UH-60M program running past 2027, when the company’s current 10-year multiyear agreement was set to wind down.

The award brings the cumulative value of the underlying contract to more than $356 million, with work on the new aircraft expected to be completed by June 30, 2028.

While the initial order covers 16 aircraft, the contract with the Army may grow by more than 100 additional helicopters.

“The next agreement will not only continue the active production line we have today, but it’s also going to set the infrastructure and the foundation for the Black Hawk that’s going to come,” said Sikorsky general manager Rich Benton.

“Our focus has always been to provide the most effective and capable Black Hawk to our customers when they need it to execute the missions they need, and the contract structure we have come to an agreement with the Army is absolutely going to deliver this.” 

Sikorsky has built Black Hawks for the Army since 1978, and more than 5,000 of the helicopters and its variants have rolled off Sikorsky’s production lines.

The UH-60M is the Army’s current-generation Black Hawk, featuring a digital cockpit, wide-chord rotor blades, and more powerful engines than earlier A and L model variants.

The aircraft remains the Army’s primary tactical utility helicopter, used for air assaults, troop transport, battlefield resupply, and medical evacuation.

Sikorsky has facilities in Stratford, Bridgeport, Shelton, North Haven, and Trumbull, with more than 240 suppliers throughout Connecticut.
