Pfizer Building $650M Groton Manufacturing Technology Center

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has announced plans for a new $650 million Manufacturing Technology Center at its research and development campus in Groton.
The 220,000-square-foot facility will produce clinical active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug products that support the company’s global clinical trials.
“Pfizer has a long and proud history of scientific innovation in Groton,” said Pfizer Groton site head Raja Mangipudy.
“The new Manufacturing Technology Center will advance our ability to support clinical research and the development of new medicines for patients around the world.”
Pfizer’s Groton campus is one of the company’s major research and development centers.
It supports scientific discovery, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical development, and the global supply of materials used in clinical research.
Investing in Innovation
“This significant investment reflects Pfizer’s commitment to improving patients’ lives and its confidence in Connecticut’s world-class life sciences workforce,” said CBIA policy director Jenna Grasso.
“Investments like this demonstrate what’s possible when we build on Connecticut’s strengths in innovation, talent, and life sciences and create an environment where companies can grow.”
“Connecticut’s economic strategy is centered on driving innovation.”
DECD’s Daniel O’Keefe
Pfizer officials said the project will modernize infrastructure for its existing workforce and bring related operations together in a new facility designed to meet the company’s future clinical manufacturing needs.
“Connecticut’s economic strategy is centered on driving innovation in the industries where our workforce, research institutions, and established companies give us the ability to lead,” said Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development commissioner Daniel O’Keefe.
“Pfizer’s investment is an endorsement of the strong momentum across Connecticut’s economy, as companies in a wide range of industries choose to expand, modernize, and make long-term commitments here.”
‘Powerful Signal’
Pfizer has had a presence in Groton since 1946. The company established its R&D operations there in 1959.
The 175-acre Groton campus employs approximately 2,700 people and includes more than two million square feet of laboratory and office space.
“The impact reaches beyond the project itself.”
CBIA’s Chris DiPentima
“When a global company like Pfizer makes this kind of commitment to Connecticut, the impact reaches beyond the project itself,” said CBIA president and CEO Chris DiPentima.
“It sends a powerful signal that Connecticut is a place where companies can invest, innovate, and grow.”
Pfizer expects construction to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with operations scheduled to begin in mid-2031.
