Business Law & Liability Council

Business Legislative and Regulatory Action

The CBIA Business Law and Liability Council is dedicated to addressing key legal and regulatory challenges impacting Connecticut businesses. The council focuses on three major issue areas:

  1. Tort Reform & Business Law: Advocating for reforms to reduce excessive litigation costs and liability risks for businesses. This includes initiatives like limiting punitive damages, restricting forum shopping, and capping non-economic damages. The council also addresses proposed changes to business laws, such as anti-retaliation statutes and restrictions on non-disclosure agreements.
  2. Consumer Protection: Monitoring and responding to legislative proposals that impact business practices and liability under the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUTPA). The council works to balance protecting consumers and ensuring that businesses can operate without excessive regulatory burdens.
  3. Business Technology (AI, Data Privacy, etc.): Engaging with emerging technology issues such as artificial intelligence regulation and data privacy laws. The council plays a crucial role in shaping policies that protect consumer data while fostering innovation and economic development.

The council’s mission is to advocate on behalf of Connecticut businesses, ensuring fair and balanced legislation that promotes a healthy business environment. Council members bring their expertise to the table, collaborating on policy positions and strategies to address these critical issues. By participating, members can influence state policies and help shape the future of business law and liability in Connecticut.
