Travelers will soon have new options when flying out of Tweed-New Haven Airport.

Avelo Airlines announced that, beginning in May, it is expanding service from Tweed to four new nonstop destinations—Atlanta, Charlotte, NC, Knoxville, TN, and Destin, FL.

Avelo said they are the only airline to offer nonstop flights from Connecticut to Knoxville and Destin, and the only low-fare airline offering flights to Atlanta and Charlotte.

With the addition of the new routes, Avelo now offers nonstop flights from Tweed to 21 destinations.

The airline said that’s more than any other airline operating in the state.

Options

“We are excited to offer Southern Connecticut residents even more travel options,” said Avelo Airlines board chair and CEO Andrew Levy.

Since 2021, Levy said almost 2 million people have flown Avelo at Tweed.

“These new routes from Avelo mark a significant milestone in Tweed-New Haven Airport’s ongoing efforts to provide more convenient, affordable, and efficient travel options.

Economic Development

Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport Authority chairman Matt Hoey said the new routes are about more than enhancing Tweed’s offerings.

“It also drives economic development for our entire region,” he said.

“By providing direct, cost-effective flights to desirable destinations, we’re making New Haven a gateway for both leisure and business travelers.”

The Atlanta and Charlotte routes begin May 2, while Knoxville service starts May 9, and Destin begins May 17.

Avelo is offering introductory one-way $62 fares for the new routes.

The fares must be booked by Feb. 13 on travel through May 21, and additional fees for carry-on and checked bags and assigned seats may apply.

Tweed-New Haven Airport has proven its utility beyond what anyone could have imagined. At 5,600’, HVN’s runway was the RIGHT RUNWAY just waiting for the RIGHT AIRPLANE….and in November 2021, the wait came to a grand conclusion with the introduction of Avelo Airlines 737-700 & 800 aircraft. What a match!!!

Not even the most ardent Tweed supporter could have imagined a 1 million + passenger throughput capacity…and yet here we are, heading for even more unimagined heights in new destinations and O & D connectivity. No Hub and Spoke from Tweed…just get where you are going, on the first and only leg of your journey to and from the Elm City and Southern Connecticut.

The improvements (not expansion) upcoming at HVN will help keep Tweed small and thus appealing to passengers whilst reaching to more needed destinations.
