Democrats Retain Stamford House Seat
Democrat Hubert Delaney won the Jan. 25 special election for the 144th House District, retaining the seat left vacant following incumbent Caroline Simmons’ election last year as Stamford mayor.
Delaney won 56% of the vote, defeating Republican Danny Melchionne with just 19% of registered voters turning out for the election.
Delaney is a U.S. Army reservist and public affairs adviser and Melchionne is a registered respiratory therapist.
Both were first-time General Assembly candidates.
Simmons held the seat for seven years and was co-chair of the legislature’s Commerce Committee when she stepped down.
Two more special elections are scheduled in the coming months to fill House vacancies in Middlebury and Hartford.
Democrats now hold 96 seats and Republicans 53 in the 151-seat House of Representatives, with two vacancies.
