Each month, we profile a Connecticut small business, showcasing the ingenuity and innovation driving the state’s economy. For March, we spoke with Global Patent Solutions patent and trademark associate Brent Raymond. Headquartered in Arizona, the company has a satellite office in Hartford.

When was your company founded?

Our company was founded in 2005 by a husband and wife.

How many employees work for your company?

We have 100 employees, all who are based in the U.S.

Who are your customers?

Global Patent Solutions LLC clients range from the largest multibillion-dollar entities to start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises.

We provide the data and analysis that enable these companies to more effectively apply for patents and trademarks, avoid infringement of other entities’ intellectual property, enforce their own IP, and manage and derive optimal value from their IP.

Thousands of successful companies, law firms, universities, and individuals have benefitted from our conscientious approach to intellectual property management.

Our clients are innovators in just about every technology and industry sector.

What makes your company unique?

Our employees are experts in the field of intellectual property.

Many of our employees are patent attorneys, trademark attorneys, or patent agents, although we do not operate as a law firm.

Other employees are former patent examiners and/or hold advanced degrees in their field of technology.

Many of our employees are patent attorneys, trademark attorneys, or patent agent.

As an organization, we handle all technologies, from medical devices to biotech to electrical energy to chemistry.

If there is technology innovation occurring, we have analysts and consultants with relevant experience.

Since we do not operate as a law firm, we are generally able to provide our consultative advice at more affordable prices.

If legal counsel is required, we are able to partner or refer to highly-qualified connections.

What is a fun fact about your business or its history?

GPS was founded by a husband and wife (both were former patent examiners) in their spare bedroom.

The company has now grown to over 100 highly-qualified experts and is one of the leading companies in its field.

Why did you choose Connecticut?

Intellectual property has always been a focus for innovative companies in Connecticut.

What is the greatest advantage to operating in Connecticut?

Our satellite offices in Connecticut allow us to foster and develop relationships with our customers in the northeast corridor.

How do you try to give back to your community?

We are actively involved in several patent and trademark associations and committees that are engaged in the policy to defend and enforce IP rights, allowing us to advise and inform our clients and communities on developing matters.

Where do you see your company in five years? Ten years?

Already one of the leading providers of intellectual property research and consulting services in the country, GPS anticipates becoming a global leader in the coming years.

What is the main thing policymakers could implement to make your company more competitive?

GPS is a certified woman-owned small business. We are extremely competitive and successfully support businesses both small and large.

We are also fortunate to have won some significant contracts with the federal government.

GPS is grateful for all policy efforts that make it possible for small, U.S.-based businesses to compete with large multi-national organizations with labor pools largely outside the U.S.
