Healthcare Costs Key Issue for Employers, Employees

Federal uncertainty on the healthcare front is certain to cause Connecticut lawmakers to approach the issue cautiously.
However, state lawmakers should act now to address state-added costs to healthcare, including mandates, taxes, and fees.
The General Assembly’s Insurance and Real Estate Committee, like other legislative committees, will operate with three co-chairs: a Republican and Democrat from the Senate and a Democrat from the House.
Senator Tim Larson (D-East Hartford) and Senator Kevin Kelly (R-Stratford) will co-chair the committee with Rep. Sean Scanlon (D-Guilford).
Rep. Rob Sampson (R-Wolcott) returns as ranking member.
CBIA is hopeful these leadership changes will present new opportunities for addressing our healthcare challenges.
Too often, lawmakers are asked to act on these bills without a full understanding of the overall impact.
This is why we believe healthcare bills that propose new mandates or taxes/fees should contain a cost/benefit analysis so lawmakers will know exactly what the proposed law will cost employers and their employees.
With healthcare costs continuing to rise and federal policy up in the air, it is essential the Insurance and Real Estate Committee focus on policies that will help small employers control rising costs.
