Special Elections Pending for Stamford, Darien Voters

Voters in Stamford and parts of Darien will head to the polls late next month or early March to fill the vacant state Senate seat formerly held by Democrat Carlo Leone.

Leone, who served five terms in the Senate, resigned the seat Jan. 5, the day before the 2021 General Assembly session convened.

The former co-chair of the legislature’s Transportation Committee resigned to take a position with the Lamont administration as a special adviser to Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti.

Leone was reelected to the 27th District seat last November with 64% of the vote.

The special election will be held 46 days after the governor issues a writ, which must be done within 10 days of Leone’s resignation.

The Senate vacancy likely will spark another special election for some Stamford voters, with state Rep. Patricia Billie Miller (D-Stamford) the reported Democratic nominee for Leone’s seat.

Democrats currently have a 23-12 advantage in the Senate, with one vacancy.
