Democrats and Republicans each retained state House seats in special elections held Jan. 14 to fill a pair of vacancies.

Republican Brian Farnen won the 132nd District seat and Democrat Brian Smith was elected in the 48th District.

Farnen, who will represent a portion of Fairfield in the legislature, received 2,463 votes, 79 more than Democrat challenger Jennifer Leeper.

In the 48th House District, which includes parts of Colchester, Lebanon, Mansfield, and Windham, Smith defeated Republican opponent Mark DeCaprio by 213 votes.

Farnen retained the seat Brenda Kupchick held since 2011. She resigned in November after being elected first selectwoman.

The Nov. 20 death of 12-term state representative Linda Orange created the vacancy in the 48th District.

Democrats now hold 91 seats in the House, with Republicans holding 59, and one vacancy.

A third special election is scheduled for Jan. 21 in Greenwich, where Republican Harry Arora faces Democrat Cheryl Moss to fill the vacant 151st House seat.

The seat was held by Republican Fred Camillo since 2009. He resigned Dec. 2 following his election as Greenwich first selectman.
