Gov. Ned Lamont has announced a special election to fill the vacancy for state representative in the 139th Assembly District.

Voters in Ledyard, Montville and Norwich will take to the polls Tuesday, Jan. 13.

The seat became vacant Nov. 23, following the death of longtime Democratic House member Kevin Ryan of Montville.

First elected to the House seat in 1992, Ryan served his assembly district through the tenure of five governors.

With multiple academic degrees, Ryan taught physics at the University of New Haven.

As the son of a small business owner, he also had an affinity for working class struggles, serving eight years as co-chair of the house labor and public employees committee.
