The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat an approximately $1.3 billion contract modification supporting the Virginia-class submarine program.

The modification adds work to a previously awarded contract for lead yard support, development studies, and design efforts.

The Navy said this modification includes options that could bring the total value of the contract change to nearly $2.5 billion.

Since April of 2020, Electric Boat has delivered five Virginia-class submarines to the U.S. Navy.

More than 90% of the work will be performed in Groton, underscoring Electric Boat’s importance to southeastern Connecticut’s workforce and supplier base.

During a March legislative briefing, Electric Boat president Mark Rayha said Electric Boat has more than 340 suppliers across Connecticut.

Additional work will be carried out in Newport News, Virginia and Quonset Point, Rhode Island.

The work is expected to be completed by April 2027.
