Grant Provides Community Colleges with New DVDs on Lean Manufacturing
In mid-March, CBIA's Education Foundation distributed DVDs on lean manufacturing at no cost to 10 of the state's community colleges. The videos, which come 14 to a set, complement certificate programs in advanced lean manufacturing and supply chain management offered at the 10 colleges.
Curriculum for the certificate programs was created by business for business to help incumbent workers and college students become more productive and attuned to the demands of advanced manufacturers in the state. The certificate programs were developed and piloted with more than 400 area residents through funding provided by a U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to CBIA in November 2006 and administered by CBIA and Quinebaug Valley Community College.
The programs, which are are part of an option in the technological studies degree, are highly interactive and include plant tours, guest speakers, and online components. The DVD series rounds out the curriculum with virtual plant tours of best practice sites in the country; a focus on the tools available in a company’s lean toolkit; opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge gained from the course and put principles into action; in-class simulations of
