After spending four weeks at their sponsor company, teachers develop projects around new skills and understandings gained from their work experience. They participate in RCNGM workshops, meet with other teachers to share knowledge and best practices, and publish projects and lesson plans that can be integrated into their curricula. CBIA's Education Foundation works with the Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing (RCNGM) to ensure that today's graduates recognize the career opportunities available in industry and technology and have the skills necessary to succeed. CBIA is the RCNGM's primary business partner in promoting manufacturing careers.
We recognize that students cannot successfully prepare for advanced manufacturing careers unless teachers understand the evolving nature of the work and can provide effective instruction in those competencies in greatest demand. To help teachers become more proficient, we coordinate work-based learning projects, or externships.
Those Who Can...Teach
Each year, interested Connecticut high-school teachers are selected to participate in RCNGM's four-week summer externship program. Their disciplines include engineering, physics, machining, technology, and drafting. Schools represented in the 2009 externship program were Litchfield High, Simsbury High, Oliver Wolcott Tech in Torrington, Colchester's Bacon Academy, Glastonbury High, and Hartford's Academy of Engineering and Green Technology.
