PMI Exceeds Stamford Hiring Targets

Philip Morris International’s U.S. business has blown past its own hiring projections in Stamford.
The company now employs more than 350 people at its Connecticut headquarters.
That’s well above the roughly 200 jobs PMI projected when th company picked Stamford as the site for its U.S. headquarters back in 2021.
The 350-plus figure reflects direct PMI employees only. It doesn’t include contractors, vendors, or third-party support staff who also contribute to the company’s economic footprint in the city.
For a city that’s spent years courting corporate relocations, it’s a notable data point.
Expanding Footprint
The growth isn’t confined to one department.
PMI U.S. has built out teams across legal, marketing, communications, human resources, employee experience, commercial operations, strategy, digital, technology, analytics, and business operations.
The company says it’s still actively recruiting across a wide range of corporate functions.
The company says it’s still actively recruiting—from early-career hires to senior leaders and specialists—across a wide range of corporate functions.
PMI U.S. CEO Stacey Kennedy framed the growth as fundamentally a talent story.
She said Stamford has become an important center for the business and a strong place to attract and retain people, pointing to the city’s innovation ecosystem and its ability to draw skilled professionals.
Stamford’s Confidence
The announcement leans heavily on new survey data commissioned by PMI U.S. and conducted by The Harris Poll.
The poll ranked Stamford first among 10 U.S. cities for resident confidence—both in their community’s direction and the country’s.
Specifically, 69% of Stamford residents said their community is headed in the right direction, and 59% said the same about the nation. Both figures topped cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons said confidence is built when people see opportunity and progress.
Stamford residents were 11 points more optimistic about their community than Americans overall, and 16 points more optimistic about the nation’s direction.
The poll also found that 86% of residents believe their community’s progress shows the country is more capable of change than it might seem, and 79% said their community has ideas that could inspire others. Good jobs, healthcare, and education topped residents’ list of investment priorities.
Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons tied the numbers directly to corporate investment, saying confidence is built when people see opportunity and progress—and that continued investment from companies like PMI U.S. reinforces that momentum.
National Investment Push
Stamford’s growth sits inside a much bigger PMI U.S. spending pattern.
Since 2022, the company says it has committed more than $1 billion to expand domestic manufacturing and build its U.S. workforce, which now tops 3,000 employees nationwide.
Recent examples include a $1.2 billion ZYN nicotine pouch manufacturing facility in Aurora, Colorado, which began commercial operations in July.
PMI U.S. has directed more than $40 million in charitable giving since 2022.
There’s also a $232 million expansion of ZYN production in Owensboro, Kentucky, more than $37 million invested in a Wilson, North Carolina facility, and roughly $50 million to open a new Business Solutions Center in Tampa, Florida.
PMI U.S. has also directed more than $40 million in charitable giving since 2022 toward economic empowerment, veterans’ support, and disaster relief nationally.
Locally, that community investment has flowed to several Connecticut organizations: the Women’s Business Development Council, Connecticut Foodshare, the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, and Stamford’s Orchestra Lumos.
