CBIA BizCast: Preparing The Future Workforce
CBIA Government Affairs Associate Ashley Zane hosted Hartford HealthCare’s vice president of talent management and development Melanie Tucker, and rising sophomore at Pathways Academy of Technology and Design Naomi Durant on the CBIA BizCast.
Durant was one of 69 students attending high school in Hartford, New Britain, or East Hartford who participated in ReadyCT’s GRIT, Get Ready! Immersive Traineeship, summer program.
As part of the five-week program small groups of students paired up with business clients and completed a project.
Hartford HealthCare, Travelers, EY, Hartford Land Bank and Stanley Black and Decker gave students either research-based, or tangible projects to complete.
Each student worked Monday through Friday, and was paid for their time thanks to the generous support of Travelers.
Tucker and Durant said they enjoyed their experiences during the unique program.
“The work product that the team produced was incredibly impressive,” Tucker said.
“They came up with some insights that we really hadn’t thought about, and I think having perspectives from a younger generation was just really insightful for us.”
Students worked with ReadyCT staff before meeting with their business clients, exploring content that included design thinking and SOAR analysis.
Once they received their project, students met with clients frequently, but also worked independently with their classmates.
“I do want to work in healthcare,” Durant said.
“So I was very excited to be able to go to the hospital, do activities, and witness a lot of things happening in the hospital.”
Durant and Tucker said this is only the start of their relationship.
A number of initiatives that students recommended to Hartford Healthcare will be implemented in the near future.
