Hartford HealthCare Announces $1B Expansion

Hartford HealthCare is investing nearly $1 billion to transform Hartford Hospital—the system’s flagship facility.
The investment will include a new patient arrival center, a healing garden, 250 private smart rooms, three floors of state-of-the-art procedure space, and major improvements to the emergency department.
“This is far more than a building project,” said Hartford HealthCare president and CEO Jeffrey Flaks.
“This is a massive investment in our community and for the future of healthcare in Hartford and Connecticut.”
“This new vision will be the most advanced, most sophisticated hospital campus anywhere in the country and will deliver exceptional, more accessible care for generations to come.”
Hospital Tower
A centerpiece of the expansion is a new Hartford Hospital tower.
The 14-story tower will include inpatient facilities featuring 216 private beds.
The tower will also include three floors of advanced procedural space with leading-edge technology.
The facility will include procedure rooms and pre- and post-procedure bays supporting electrophysiology, cardiac catheterization, gastroenterology, and ambulatory surgery.
Hartford HealthCare said the tower will “stand as an iconic symbol for innovation, access, excellence, and a long-term commitment to the Hartford community.”
Construction is expected to begin next year, with the tower scheduled to open in 2031.
Emergency Department
The expansion also includes renovations to Hartford Hospital’s emergency department.
Plans include a new front entrance and new areas for check-in, waiting, and triage.
The redesign also adds new treatment beds and observation areas.
“This is a win, win, win and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Hartford HealthCare’s Jeffrey Flaks
Hartford HealthCare’s goal with the redesign is to address overcrowding, patient boarding, and flow to improve safety and access to care.
“The plans will allow us to meet the needs of our patients by delivering advanced, high-quality care through expanded, modernized spaces of healing,” said Hartford Hospital president Cheryl Ficara.
“We have the best health care in America here in Connecticut. We have the best people, most devoted, most talented people,” said Flaks.
“This is going to bring people to work in Connecticut and going to support our local suppliers. This is a win, win, win and I couldn’t be prouder.”
