United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut this week awarded $2.1 million to organizations supporting education, financial security, and basic needs programs.

Volunteers helped choose 67 programs who have strong collaborations across the state and offer the furthest reach in the community.

The board later approved the awards.

“Families are facing a significant number of challenges due to inflation,” United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut president and CEO Eric Harrison said.

“In this environment, it’s important that we come together to meet immediate needs and tackle long-term issues facing our community.”

Focus Areas

The funding spans across three focus areas

United Way awarded $1.2 million to organizations as part of United WE READ, $489,000 as part of United for ALICE, and $489,000 for the basic needs programs.

United WE READ focuses on ways to increase third-grade reading proficiency in kids.

East Hartford Public Schools, the Boys and Girls Club of Harford, and area YMCA and YWCAs were among the programs to receive the award.

United for ALICE awards are geared towards connecting youth and adults to workforce skill development and career training.

The intended recipients represent households that live above the federal poverty line, but below the basic cost of living.

Connecticut Foodshare, Urban League of Greater Hartford, and Workforce Solutions Collaborative of Metro Hartford are among United for ALICE award recipients.

Connecticut Foodshare also received funds under the basic needs awards, along with American Red Cross, Greater Hartford Legal Aid, and The Arc of Farmington Valley.
