Sikorsky Aircraft has signed a five-year, $2.3 billion contract with the U.S. Army to build 120 H-60M Black Hawk helicopters.

The agreement also features options for an additional 135 aircraft, bringing the total potential contract value to $4.4 billion.

The agreement also features options for an additional 135 Black Hawks.

Stratford-based Sikorsky will manufacture and deliver the aircraft from July 2022 and through 2027.

“Decades of Black Hawk production and enhancements, strong program execution and close partnership with the Army has kept the program thriving, and this contract is a testament to that success,” said Nathalie Previte, vice president of Sikorsky’s Army and Air Force programs.

The Lockheed Martin company is also bidding on Pentagon contracts to replace several existing programs, including its iconic Black Hawk helicopter.

The company’s Raider X is one of two finalists in one of the Pentagon programs and it is partnering with Boeing on the Defiant X, a finalist for the U.S. Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft program.

Connecticut Commitment

Announced late last month, the Army deal follows the recently approved agreement with the Lamont administration to keep Sikorsky headquartered in Connecticut at least through 2042.

Sikorsky will also employ a minimum of 7,000 employees in exchange for up to $75 million in tax credits from the state.

The Pentagon is expected to make a decision regarding the new programs later this year.

“We continue to see strong international interest in the Black Hawk due to its versatility and proven record of providing unwavering support to the U.S. and nations around the globe,” Previte said.

The deal represents 10th multi-year contract between Sikorsky and the U.S. government for H-60 helicopters.

“With more than 2,100 H-60 variants in the U.S. Army’s inventory, the Black Hawk continues to be the workhorse and backbone of U.S. Army Aviation,” parent company Lockheed Martin noted in a statement.
