The Department of Consumer Protection is warning about an imposter scam targeting people who hold Connecticut credentials.

Those credentials include licenses, permits, and registrations.

Officials said the phishing scam appears to target anyone who manages their credentials through the state’s eLicense system.

The scam is an attempt to steal victims’ personal information.

“The Department of Consumer Protection issues more than 200,000 credentials annually, most of which are managed using the eLicense system,” said DCP commissioner Bryan Cafferelli.

Warning Signs

The DCP said there are several signs to watch out for:

  • The true email address behind the “From” name is not what is actually displayed, and does not end in .gov
  • CT.GOV is not the DCP logo
  • The link does not take you to a ct.gov webpage (must have “ct.gov” just before the first “/”)
  • DCP would never revoke a license without a formal hearing
Example of a scam email.

“Phishing attempts and imposter scams are common, so it is important to remain vigilant and recognize the signs of a scam,” Cafferelli said.

DCP reminds people not to click on any links if they receive a suspicious email and to delete it immediately.

If you did follow a link and provide personal information, DCP encourages you to change your password on your eLicense account, and any other site where you used the same password.
