Employers and training organizations can apply for nearly $13 million in federal grants to support workplace safety and health training.

The Susan Harwood Training Grants from the U.S. Department of Labor are designed to help workers and employers identify and prevent workplace safety and health hazards.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration administers the $12.7 million grant program.

OSHA said the program will emphasize industries with high injury, illness, and fatality rates.

The grants will fund training and education on hazard awareness, avoidance, and controls to protect workers from on-the-job hazards, and to inform workers of their rights and employers of their responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Training Funding

The program includes two grant categories:

  • Targeted Topic Training supports programs that identify and prevent workplace hazards and requires applicants to provide training on OSHA-designated safety and health hazards.
  • Training and Educational Materials Development supports the creation of classroom-ready training and educational materials that identify and prevent workplace hazards.

The grants are available to organizations including nonprofits, employer associations, labor unions, public and state colleges and universities, entities that operate OSHA On-Site Consultation programs, and OSHA Training Institute Education Centers.

Applications must register with Grants.gov and the System of Award Management to apply.

The deadline for applications is 11:59 pm on July 31.

DOL named the program for Dr. Susan Harwood, who spent 17 years with OSHA developing workplace safety standards and health guidelines.
