Shelton Board of Education chair Amy Romano won the April 22 special election for the vacant 113rd House District seat.

The Republican took 53% of the vote, defeating Democrat Mike Duncan, a member of the Water Pollution Control Authority.

Romano retained a seat held by the GOP for 50 years—including the last 18 years by Jason Perillo, who moved to the state Senate after winning a Feb. 25 special election in the 21st District.

Perillo succeeded former Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly, who resigned early this year to accept a judicial nomination.

Romano, who owns a real estate development company with her husband, said she is committed to “promoting affordability, safety, and common sense.”

Democrats hold 103 seats to the Republicans’ 48 in the state House and have a 24-12 majority in the Senate.
