August Date for Greenwich State Senate Special Election

Voters in Greenwich and parts of Stamford and New Canaan will head to the polls Aug. 17 to elect a successor to Democratic state Senator Alex Kasser, who resigned unexpectedly June 22.

Kasser won the seat last November with 51% of the vote, defeating Republican Ryan Fazio, a Greenwich Representative Town Meeting member who is expected to be his party’s endorsed candidate in the special election.

Republicans held the 36th Senate District seat for almost 90 years before Kasser defeated incumbent Scott Frantz in 2018.

Fazio, state Rep. Harry Arora (R-Greenwich), and Republican National Committee executive committee member Leora Levy are all seeking the GOP nomination.

Democrats nominated first-time candidate Alexis Gevanter, an attorney and the former leader of the Connecticut chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Fellow Democrat John Blankley, who did not contest the nomination, is planning on running as an unaffiliated candidate.

Blankley must collect the signatures of at least 546 36th District registered voters by July 12 to gain a spot on the ballot.

The winner of the special election will carry out the remainder of Kasser’s term, which runs through the end of 2022.
