Gov. Ned Lamont this week announced special elections to fill two Connecticut General Assembly vacancies.

Voters will go to the polls Feb. 25 to elect a new state senator for the 21st Senate District, covering Shelton and parts of Seymour and Stratford.

A special election will be held the same day to fill the vacant 40th House District, which includes parts of Groton and New London.

Republican Kevin Kelly ran unopposed for an eighth Senate term in November, but resigned his seat prior to the Jan. 8 opening of the 2025 General Assembly.

Kelly, a former Senate Republican Leader, reportedly will be nominated as a judge of the Connecticut Superior Court.

Democrat Christine Conley won a fourth House term with 66% of the vote last November, resigning Jan. 7 in anticipation of an appointment to the Workers’ Compensation Commission.

Democrats currently hold a 25-10 advantage in the Senate, with one vacancy, and 101 seats to the Republicans’ 49 in the House, with one seat vacant.
