Lamont Nominates New Consumer Protection Agency Head

Gov. Ned Lamont has nominated Bryan Cafferelli, the Senate Republican caucus’ legal counsel, to lead the Department of Consumer Protection.

If confirmed by the General Assembly, Cafferelli will join Department of Revenue Services commissioner Mark Boughton as the second Republican member of the Democratic governor’s cabinet.

Caferelli served as a drug control attorney with DCP from 2017 to 2019, responsible for managing the agency’s drug enforcement cases, including administrative action, rule making, and statutory and regulatory development.

“He is strongly aligned with our administration’s mission of protecting consumers while also streamlining processes to make it easier for the residents and businesses of our state to interact with their government,” Lamont said in a Feb. 27 statement.

If confirmed, Cafferelli will succeed Michelle Seagull, who announced she was stepping down in December after leading the agency since 2017.

Seagull oversaw the rollout of the state’s adult-use recreational marijuana market and the launch of online gaming and sports betting.
