Each month, we profile a Connecticut manufacturer, showcasing the ingenuity and innovation driving the state’s economy. For September, we spoke with Whitman Controls LLC vice president and COO Scott Boulanger.

When was your company founded?

1975

How many employees work for your company?

15

What products does your company manufacture? Who are your customers?

Whitman Controls manufactures pressure and vacuum sensors, temperature switches, and liquid level sensors, etc.

Why did you choose manufacturing?

We believe that U.S.-based manufacturing drives our local economies.

We believe through strong domestic supply chains, the U.S. has more control over its own destiny.

What makes your company unique?

We are a service-disabled, veteran-owned company that is proudly “made in the USA.”

We have a large variety of stocked and made-to-order items with best-in-class lead times.

We can also custom engineer solutions to meet your special application requirements.

Why did you choose Connecticut?

Connecticut, and New England in general, has been the heart of many large manufacturers.

The supply chain serving them is still well networked and connected.

Many local, state, and federal resources also cater to the small businesses that reside here, so there are many opportunities to grow your business.

What is the greatest advantage to operating in Connecticut?

The people. The diversity of people and thoughts, as well as their industries, throughout Connecticut allows for innovation, which fuels growth.

Where do you see your company in five years? Ten years?

We’re growing quickly and looking to acquire similar businesses within our industry to grow even faster.

What’s the main thing policymakers could implement to make your company more competitive?

Connecticut has already considered creating a small business cooperative for health insurance so we could collectively bargain for better deals.

That would certainly help us stay attractive compared to the larger corporations in the state.
