Oct. 1 Brings New Workplace Smoking Restrictions

A new smoking ban in Connecticut that goes into effect Oct. 1 will impact businesses large and small. 

The smoking ban, known as the Clean Air Act, is tucked away in the state’s marijuana law.  

Under a provision of Public Act No. 21-1, employers can no longer provide smoking rooms and outdoor smoking areas must be at least 25 feet away from the building. 

This includes smoking cigarettes, cigars, and vaping. 

Under the law, the person in control of the premises has to post signage “in a conspicuous place,” alerting people that there is no smoking in or around the building. 

For businesses that outlawed indoor smoking years ago, they are still required to post signage after Oct. 1. 

Letters on the sign must be at least four inches high and half an inch wide.

The provisions are among a series of new Connecticut workplace laws that take effect Oct. 1, 2021.
