Sikorsky Tests New Black Hawk Engines

Stratford-based Sikorsky has begun ground runs on its UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters equipped with two GE Aerospace T901 Improved Turbine Engines.
The new engine is designed to boost the aircraft’s performance and range.
Sikorsky officials said the engine is “fundamental” to modernizing the Black Hawk.
“Soldiers will rely on Black Hawk helicopters well into the future, and upgrades to the aircraft today will pay dividends for decades,” said Sikorsky Army and Air Force Systems vice president Hamid Salim.
Increasing Capabilities
A combined U.S. Army and an industry test team performed the ground runs with Army and Sikorsky pilots Jan. 25 in West Palm Beach, FL.
The goal of the test was to demonstrate the T901 ITE engines’ functionality, critical systems, and engine health.
Sikorsky said the T901 ITE engines will increase the Black Hawk’s power by 50%.
It will also will increase the aircraft’s range, offer greater lift capability, and reduce fuel consumption.
“A modernized Black Hawk fleet will create new operational opportunities for the Army by extending the capabilities of a proven, fielded fleet to travel farther on less fuel and with more troops and cargo,” Salim said.
The success of the tests sets the stage for more advanced testing, including hover and forward flight tests.
